Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Grape-seed oil is a plant-derived edible oil extracted from the seeds of grapes (Vitis vinifera), typically as a byproduct of winemaking. It is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids—primarily linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid)—and contains significant amounts of vitamin E and phenolic antioxidants such as procyanidins, quercetin, resveratrol, carotenoids, and phytosterols[1][2][6]. Grape-seed oil is used both as a cooking ingredient due to its neutral flavor and high smoke point and in cosmetic products for its moisturizing properties. Its mechanism of action is primarily attributed to antioxidant activity (from vitamin E and phenolic compounds) that helps protect cells from oxidative stress. Some studies suggest it may reduce inflammation, improve insulin resistance, lower platelet aggregation (reducing blood clotting), support cardiovascular health by lowering cholesterol or reducing risk factors for heart disease, and benefit skin health through topical application[1][2][3][6]. However, clinical evidence supporting many health claims remains limited.
