Grass and rye pollens allergoids are chemically modified allergen extracts used in allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) to treat allergic rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis caused by grass and rye pollen. These allergoids are designed to have reduced allergenicity (lower IgE-binding capacity) but retained immunogenicity (ability to stimulate an immune response), which allows for the administration of higher, more effective doses with an improved safety profile. The mechanism of action involves modulating the immune system to induce tolerance to the specific pollen allergens. This is achieved by shifting the T-helper cell balance from a Th2-dominant (allergic) to a Th1-dominant (non-allergic) response, promoting the generation of regulatory T cells, and increasing the production of allergen-specific IgG antibodies that can block IgE-mediated reactions. This leads to a sustained reduction in allergic symptoms upon subsequent natural exposure to grass and rye pollens.
