Overview

Grass pollen allergen extract is a biologic immunotherapy agent used for the treatment of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. Developed as a novel delivery method by the University of Zurich, the extract is administered via ultrasound-guided intralymphatic immunotherapy (ILIT) directly into the inguinal lymph nodes. This approach is designed to significantly enhance the efficiency of allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) by targeting the allergen directly to the site of T-cell and B-cell interaction. Clinical trials, including a pivotal 2008 study, demonstrated that just three intralymphatic injections over two months can provide clinical efficacy and immune tolerance comparable to three years of conventional subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT), which typically requires over 50 injections. The therapy aims to induce long-term allergen tolerance, reduce symptoms, and decrease the requirement for rescue medications with a lower risk of systemic adverse events.
