This drug is a combination of standardized allergenic extracts from two types of grass pollen: Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and Bermuda Grass (Cynodon dactylon). It is used for allergen-specific immunotherapy in patients with allergic rhinitis (hay fever), with or without conjunctivitis, caused by these specific pollens. The treatment works by modulating the immune system's response to these allergens. By administering gradually increasing doses of the extracts, the therapy aims to induce immunological tolerance, which reduces the severity of allergy symptoms upon environmental exposure. The underlying mechanism is believed to involve a shift from a T-helper 2 (Th2) cell-dominated, pro-allergic response to a T-helper 1 (Th1) and regulatory T-cell (Treg) dominated, tolerant state. This leads to a decrease in allergen-specific IgE antibodies and an increase in blocking antibodies like IgG4. This combination is typically prepared by a healthcare professional as a custom formulation for subcutaneous injection, based on the patient's specific sensitivities confirmed by diagnostic testing.
