Overview
This is an investigational topical pharmaceutical formulation developed by the Universidade do Vale do Sapucai (UNIVÁS) in Brazil for the treatment of melasma. The product combines a botanical extract derived from green banana peels (Musa sapientum) with a standard SPF 30 sunscreen. The green banana peel extract contains natural bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids, and phenols, which are hypothesized to provide antioxidant benefits and assist in skin depigmentation. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 randomized clinical trial (NCT05031689) to assess its efficacy and safety in reducing melasma severity in women aged 18-60 years compared to a control group using sunscreen alone.
