Green-lipped mussel (GLM), derived from the species *Perna canaliculus* native to New Zealand, is a dietary supplement primarily used to manage inflammatory conditions, most notably osteoarthritis. [2, 5] Its therapeutic effects are attributed to a unique and complex profile of lipids, including various omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) like EPA, DHA, and the rare eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA), as well as furan fatty acids. [3, 6, 21] These compounds are believed to exert anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting key enzymes in the arachidonic acid cascade, specifically cyclooxygenase (COX) and 5-lipoxygenase (LOX). [3, 13] Clinical studies in humans have demonstrated that GLM extracts can reduce joint pain, stiffness, and improve mobility in patients with knee osteoarthritis. [1, 4] Some research also suggests it may improve gastrointestinal function in these patients, potentially by modulating the gut microbiota. [12] In addition to human use, green-lipped mussel is widely used in veterinary medicine to alleviate symptoms of arthritis in dogs and other animals. [6, 14]
