Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Green propolis is a natural resinous substance collected by honeybees (*Apis mellifera*) from specific botanical sources, primarily *Baccharis dracunculifolia* in Brazil and *Macaranga tanarius* in Taiwan. It is chemically distinct from other propolis types due to its high concentration of bioactive compounds such as prenylated flavanones (propolins C, D, F, G, and H) in the Taiwanese variety and artepillin C, p-coumaric acid, and caffeic acid in the Brazilian variety. Green propolis exhibits a broad range of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and antimicrobial effects. Clinical investigations have explored its potential in managing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), dyslipidemia, oral mucositis in cancer patients, and as an adjunct treatment for COVID-19 and chronic kidney disease-related inflammation.
