Overview

Green tea catechin extract is a concentrated preparation derived from the leaves of Camellia sinensis and is rich in polyphenolic compounds known as catechins. The primary active constituents are epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), and epicatechin gallate (ECG). EGCG is the most abundant and biologically active component. Green tea catechins act as potent antioxidants by neutralizing reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. They have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, anti-proliferative, lipid-lowering, glucose-modulating, and potential chemopreventive effects in preclinical studies. Clinical trials have evaluated their use for cancer prevention (notably breast and prostate cancer), cardiovascular risk reduction via lipid lowering, metabolic syndrome management including weight loss and glucose homeostasis support, cognitive impairment adjunct therapy with L-theanine co-administration, UV protection (topical use), depression symptom reduction through regular consumption as a beverage or supplement form. A topical formulation of sinecatechins has been FDA-approved for the treatment of anogenital warts[1][3][6][8]. Green tea catechin extracts can inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes affecting drug metabolism[2]. High doses or certain formulations may be associated with hepatotoxicity[5][7].
