This investigational topical treatment, developed by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, utilizes specific constituents derived from green tea (*Camellia sinensis*), namely caffeine and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), to protect against ultraviolet (UV)-induced skin damage and sunburn. The treatment is applied topically to the skin following UV exposure. Its mechanism of action involves enhancing the expression of the p53 protein and activating caspase-3, which collectively promote apoptosis (programmed cell death) in DNA-damaged skin cells. By facilitating the removal of these damaged cells, the treatment aims to reduce the risk of UV-induced erythema and long-term skin damage. It has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials as a topical solution applied immediately and at sequential time points after UVB exposure.
