Overview

Green tea extract (GTE) is a botanical extract derived from the leaves of *Camellia sinensis*, primarily characterized by its high concentration of polyphenolic catechins, most notably (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). GTE is widely utilized as a dietary supplement and investigated as a therapeutic agent for obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular health. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), which leads to increased levels of norepinephrine and subsequent stimulation of thermogenesis and fat oxidation. Additionally, GTE has been shown to activate the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway, reduce intestinal lipid absorption, and modulate obesity-related hormones such as adiponectin, ghrelin, and leptin. Clinical studies have demonstrated its potential to reduce body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), particularly when combined with endurance training or dietary modifications.
