Griseofulvin is an oral antifungal small molecule derived from species of Penicillium. It is primarily used to treat dermatophyte (tinea) infections of the skin, hair, and nails—including tinea capitis (scalp), tinea corporis (body/ringworm), tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), and onychomycosis (nail infections). It acts as a fungistatic agent by binding to fungal microtubules—specifically alpha and beta tubulin—disrupting mitosis in susceptible fungi. Additionally, it binds to keratin precursor cells in human tissue; this makes newly formed keratin resistant to fungal invasion. Its activity is limited to dermatophytes such as Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton species[1][2][3][4][5][6].
