GRNCHND-1 is an investigational cell therapy consisting of chondrocytes derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Originally developed by Geron Corporation, the program was transferred to Asterias Biotherapeutics in 2013 as part of a broader portfolio of hESC-derived cellular assets. The therapy is designed to treat osteoarthritis by regenerating or repairing damaged articular cartilage within the joints. By delivering functional, stem cell-derived chondrocytes directly to the site of injury, the treatment aims to restore the structural integrity of the cartilage, potentially alleviating chronic pain and improving joint mobility. Following the acquisition of Asterias Biotherapeutics by BioTime (now Lineage Cell Therapeutics) in 2019, the development of GRNCHND-1 has been categorized as pending or inactive in public pipeline disclosures.
