This drug is a glycoconjugate vaccine component consisting of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) from Group B Streptococcus (GBS) serotype Ia covalently linked to the CRM197 carrier protein. CRM197 is a non-toxic mutant of the diphtheria toxin that enhances the immunogenicity of the polysaccharide by invoking a T-cell dependent immune response, which is essential for inducing long-term immunological memory and high-affinity antibodies. Developed by Pfizer as a key constituent of their hexavalent GBS vaccine candidate (GBS6 or PF-06760805), it is primarily intended for maternal immunization. The therapeutic strategy involves inducing high titers of serotype-specific IgG antibodies in pregnant women, which are then actively transported across the placenta to the fetus. This provides passive protection to the neonate during the first months of life, a critical window for preventing invasive GBS disease, including neonatal sepsis and meningitis.
