Overview

Group B streptococcus capsular polysaccharide type V conjugated to CRM197 is a glycoconjugate vaccine component developed by Pfizer. It consists of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) from Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus) serotype V covalently linked to CRM197, a non-toxic mutant of the diphtheria toxin that serves as a carrier protein. This conjugation is designed to enhance the immunogenicity of the polysaccharide by invoking a T-cell dependent immune response, which is critical for achieving a robust and lasting antibody response in infants and pregnant women. This specific conjugate is a key component of Pfizer's hexavalent GBS vaccine candidate, PF-06760805 (GBS6), which is being developed for maternal immunization to prevent invasive GBS disease in neonates and young infants. The vaccine works by inducing serotype-specific opsonophagocytic antibodies in the mother, which are then transferred transplacentally to the fetus, providing passive immunity at birth.
