Overview

GS-400 is an investigational hydrogel-based medical device being developed by Gelesis for the treatment and management of mucositis. Mucositis is a common and debilitating side effect of cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, characterized by the inflammation and ulceration of the mucous membranes in the digestive tract. GS-400 utilizes Gelesis' proprietary superabsorbent hydrogel technology—composed of cross-linked cellulose and citric acid—to create a non-systemic, mechanical barrier. When administered, the hydrogel is intended to protect the mucosal lining from further irritation, maintain a moist environment to support healing, and potentially reduce the severity of symptoms through physical rather than pharmacological action. As of the latest pipeline reports, GS-400 is in the preclinical stage of development.
