Drug intelligence / Profile preview
GS-500 (also known as CSP01) is an investigational, orally administered superabsorbent hydrogel developed by Gelesis for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) and functional constipation. The product is synthesized from two naturally derived building blocks—modified cellulose and citric acid—which are cross-linked to create a three-dimensional matrix. GS-500 works through a non-pharmacological, mechanical mechanism of action: upon oral administration, the hydrogel absorbs gastrointestinal fluids and maintains high viscoelastic properties as it travels into the colon. The resulting increase in volume and mechanical stimulation of the colonic wall are designed to reduce colonic transit time and alleviate constipation symptoms. It is classified as a medical device rather than a traditional pharmaceutical drug.
