Overview

GSI-1721 is a recombinant engineered heme-protein based on neuroglobin, currently in preclinical development by Globin Solutions for the treatment of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. As a neuroglobin-based CO scavenger, GSI-1721 is designed to bind carbon monoxide with extremely high affinity, effectively sequestering the gas from the bloodstream and tissues. This mechanism aims to reverse the toxic effects of CO poisoning by facilitating the clearance of CO and restoring the oxygen-carrying capacity of endogenous hemoglobin. The protein is engineered to optimize its stability and binding kinetics for therapeutic use as an intravenous antidote.
