Overview

GSK 2189242A is an investigational protein-based vaccine developed by GSK for the prevention of infections caused by *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. Unlike traditional pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) which target the polysaccharide capsule of specific serotypes, this vaccine utilizes novel, conserved, recombinant surface proteins as antigens. This approach aims to provide broader, serotype-independent protection by targeting protein antigens that are present across multiple pneumococcal strains. The vaccine has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials, particularly in infant and pediatric populations, to assess its safety, immunogenicity, and impact on nasopharyngeal carriage when co-administered with routine Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) vaccines.
