GSK159802 is a potent, inhaled, long-acting selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist (LABA) developed for the once-daily treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It acts by stimulating beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the lungs, leading to relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and resulting in bronchodilation. This mechanism provides relief from symptoms such as airway constriction associated with asthma and COPD. The drug was investigated both as a standalone therapy and as part of combination products with inhaled corticosteroids. Clinical studies demonstrated significant bronchodilation lasting at least 24 hours post-dose. Development was discontinued after phase II trials for asthma and phase I/II trials for COPD due to strategic reasons rather than safety concerns[1][2][3][6].
