GSK513026 (GSK)

GSK513026 is an investigational protein-based vaccine developed by GSK for the prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. Unlike traditional pneumococcal vaccines that target the polysaccharide capsule (conjugate or polysaccharide vaccines), GSK513026 utilizes conserved pneumococcal proteins as antigens. These typically include Pneumococcal histidine triad protein D (PhtD) and a detoxified version of pneumolysin (PlyD1). The rationale behind this protein-based approach is to provide broad, serotype-independent protection by targeting antigens that are highly conserved across various strains of the bacteria. The vaccine was primarily evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials involving healthy elderly subjects to determine if it could provide superior or complementary protection compared to the standard 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine.
