It was originally developed as a potential oral therapy for HIV-1 infection, targeting the C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5), which is involved in HIV entry into host cells. The drug was also studied for its ability to maintain clinical remission in rheumatoid arthritis patients after withdrawal of Enbrel (etanercept).
