GSR-2021 is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine candidate developed by Global Standard Research (GSR) in collaboration with the National Institute for Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani (INMI) and Anbiotec. The vaccine utilizes a recombinant version of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, specifically focusing on the receptor-binding domain (RBD), to induce a protective immune response against COVID-19. Upon intramuscular administration, the recombinant protein acts as an antigen that is recognized by the host's immune system, prompting the production of neutralizing antibodies and the activation of T-cell mediated immunity. These antibodies are designed to bind to the spike protein on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, effectively blocking its interaction with the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor and preventing viral entry into host cells. GSR-2021 is typically formulated with an adjuvant, such as aluminum hydroxide, to enhance its immunogenicity and has been evaluated in early-phase clinical trials to assess its safety and immunogenic profile.
