Overview

Guaiazulene is a small molecule sesquiterpenoid derived from the guaiane skeleton, commonly found in chamomile oil and other natural sources. It is primarily used as a cosmetic color additive and in personal care products for its soothing properties[2][3][7]. In medicine, it has been formulated for ophthalmic use and topical applications due to its anti-inflammatory effects[2][7]. Guaiazulene exerts biological activity by stabilizing cell membrane structures, inhibiting cyclooxygenase‐2 (COX‐2), regulating cytokine secretion, and reducing histamine release from mast cells[6][8]. Derivatives of guaiazulene have shown potential anticancer activity through inhibition of mitochondrial electron transport complex II, leading to decreased oxidative phosphorylation and induction of apoptosis in cancer cells[5][6].
