Overview

Guaifenesin is an expectorant used to relieve chest congestion and facilitate the removal of mucus from the respiratory tract. It is commonly found in over-the-counter cough and cold medications. Guaifenesin works primarily by increasing the volume and reducing the viscosity of bronchial secretions through stimulation of the gastric mucosa or possibly direct action on respiratory epithelium. This process enhances mucociliary clearance and makes coughs more productive[1][2][4][5]. There is also evidence suggesting minor central antitussive effects and possible NMDA receptor antagonism[4][5]. Guaifenesin does not treat underlying causes of symptoms but helps manage them by thinning mucus for easier expulsion. It is indicated for temporary symptomatic relief from chest congestion due to colds or flu.
