Guanabenz is an orally active, centrally acting antihypertensive drug that functions as a selective alpha2 adrenergic receptor agonist. Its primary mechanism of action involves stimulation of central alpha2A adrenergic receptors, leading to decreased sympathetic outflow from the brain to the heart, kidneys, and peripheral vasculature. This results in relaxation of blood vessels, reduced peripheral vascular resistance, and lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Guanabenz is used mainly for the treatment of hypertension.
