Guanidinoethylmercaptosuccinic acid (GEMSA) is a synthetic small molecule that acts as a potent inhibitor of enkephalin convertase, an enzyme involved in the processing of enkephalins, which are endogenous opioid peptides. By inhibiting this enzyme, GEMSA can modulate levels of enkephalins and potentially influence pain signaling and other physiological processes mediated by these neuropeptides. It has been used primarily as an experimental tool in biochemical and pharmacological research to study the role of enkephalin convertase and related pathways[1][4]. There is no evidence that it has been developed or approved for clinical use.
