Overview

Guarana is a natural plant extract derived from the seeds of *Paullinia cupana*, a climbing plant native to the Amazon basin. It is widely used as a dietary supplement and ingredient in energy drinks due to its high caffeine content. Guarana contains several bioactive compounds including caffeine (also called guaranine), theophylline, and theobromine. Its primary mechanism of action is central nervous system stimulation via adenosine receptor antagonism by caffeine. This leads to increased alertness and reduced fatigue. Guarana also exhibits antioxidant properties due to its polyphenol content and may have anti-inflammatory effects independent of caffeine[5][6]. Other suggested benefits include enhanced cognitive performance (memory and attention), weight loss support (possibly through appetite suppression or increased metabolism), pain relief (via adenosine receptor blockade), improved cardiovascular health (by reducing LDL oxidation and improving blood flow), digestive regulation (anti-diarrheal at low doses; laxative at high doses due to caffeine-induced peristalsis), metabolic effects such as prevention of insulin resistance in animal models, potential wound healing properties when combined with other botanicals like acai seed extract[5][6][10]. However, most clinical evidence for these uses remains limited or inconclusive.
