Overview

Guava leaves aqueous extract is a water-based preparation derived from the leaves of the *Psidium guajava* plant. Rich in polyphenols (notably quercetin, catechin, gallic acid), flavonoids (such as avicularin and myricetin), saponins, tannins, and other phytochemicals, this botanical product has been traditionally used in folk medicine for its diverse biological activities. Preclinical and limited clinical studies suggest it exhibits antidiabetic effects by improving glucose metabolism—promoting hepatic glycogen synthesis and modulating gut microbiota—antioxidant activity via scavenging free radicals, antimicrobial action against various pathogens (including bacteria causing diarrhea), lipid-lowering effects through inhibition of digestive enzymes like lipase and α-glycosidase/α-amylase (implicated in obesity management), anti-inflammatory properties, hepatoprotection, potential anticancer activity via selective estrogen receptor modulation-like mechanisms, antihypertensive effects possibly due to vasodilatory antioxidant actions on blood vessels, and relief of menstrual cramps[1][2][4][5][6][7][8].
