Overview

*Guazuma ulmifolia*, commonly known as mutamba or West Indian Elm, is a medicinal plant native to the tropical regions of the Americas. It is extensively utilized in traditional medicine for its diverse therapeutic properties, including use as a slimming agent, an antidiabetic, and a treatment for gastrointestinal and respiratory disorders. The plant extracts, derived from leaves, bark, and fruit, are rich in bioactive phytochemicals such as flavonoids (including proanthocyanidins and catechins), tannins, and phenolic acids. Clinical and preclinical research has focused on its potential to improve metabolic profiles in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, inhibit HMG-CoA reductase for antihyperlipidemic effects, and provide hepatoprotection against oxidative stress. Additionally, it has demonstrated anthelmintic activity against parasites like *Haemonchus contortus* and antiplasmodial activity against malaria. Beyond medicine, it is explored as a natural coagulant for water treatment and a nutritional supplement for livestock.
