Guedes Pinto paste is a multi-component endodontic filling material specifically formulated for the root canal treatment of primary (deciduous) teeth in pediatric dentistry. Developed by Dr. Antonio Carlos Guedes-Pinto in Brazil, the paste is traditionally a manual mixture of three main components: iodoform, camphorated paramonochlorophenol (CPMC) or paramonochlorophenol (PMCP), and Rifocort (a combination ointment of rifamycin and prednisolone). Its mechanism of action is based on the synergistic effects of its ingredients: iodoform provides radiopacity and sustained antimicrobial action; paramonochlorophenol acts as a potent antiseptic; rifamycin offers broad-spectrum antibiotic coverage; and prednisolone serves as a corticosteroid to reduce periapical inflammation. It is highly valued in clinical practice for its biocompatibility, resorptive capacity similar to that of the roots of primary teeth, and high success rates in treating necrotic pulp.
