Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Guizhi Jia Huangqi Decoction (also known as Guizhi Jia Huangqi Tang or Keishikaoogito) is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Kampo formulation. It is an enhanced version of the traditional Guizhi Decoction, incorporating *Astragalus mongholicus* (Huangqi) into a base of cinnamon twig (*Ramulus Cinnamomi*), peony root (*Radix Paeoniae Alba*), licorice root (*Radix Glycyrrhizae*), fresh ginger (*Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens*), and jujube fruit (*Fructus Jujubae*). Originally approved in Japan in 1986 for the treatment of asthenia (fatigue and physical weakness), the formulation has also been investigated for its immunomodulatory and antiviral properties. Recent research indicates that Guizhi Jia Huangqi Decoction can disrupt the hepatitis B virus (HBV) lifecycle by modulating the cAMP/PKC/AKT signaling axis, leading to reduced expression of the sodium/bile acid cotransporter (NTCP) and direct inhibition of covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) transcription. It is also studied in combination with nucleos(t)ide analogues and pegylated interferon to enhance functional cure rates in patients with chronic hepatitis B [1.1].
