GW117 is a novel small molecule drug under development as an antidepressant and anxiolytic. It acts as an agonist at melatonin receptors MT1 and MT2, and as an antagonist at the serotonin 5-HT2C receptor. This dual mechanism is thought to contribute to its antidepressant and anxiolytic effects by modulating both circadian rhythms (via melatonin receptors) and serotonergic neurotransmission (via 5-HT2C antagonism). Preclinical studies have demonstrated that GW117 increases neurotrophic factors such as BDNF in the hippocampus, enhances neuronal regeneration, reduces pro-apoptotic markers, and improves behavioral outcomes in animal models of depression and anxiety[1][4][5]. The drug is being developed primarily for major depressive disorder but also shows potential for anxiety-related conditions.
