GW501516, also known as Cardarine and Endurobol, is a synthetic small molecule that acts as a highly selective agonist of the peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor delta (PPARδ). It was originally developed for the potential treatment of dyslipidemia, obesity, lipid disorders, and cardiovascular disease. By activating PPARδ with high affinity and selectivity over other PPAR subtypes, it upregulates genes involved in energy expenditure and fatty acid metabolism. In preclinical studies, it increased fatty acid oxidation in skeletal muscle and improved lipid profiles. However, development was discontinued after findings that activation of PPARδ by this compound could promote cancer growth in animal models[1][2][5][8].
