Overview

GW9508 is an experimental small molecule research tool developed by GSK that acts as a dual agonist for Free Fatty Acid Receptor 1 (FFAR1/GPR40) and Free Fatty Acid Receptor 4 (FFAR4/GPR120). It exhibits significantly higher potency for FFAR1, with approximately 100-fold greater selectivity over FFAR4. In preclinical models, GW9508 has demonstrated the ability to potentiate glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and activate ATP-sensitive potassium channels in pancreatic beta cells. Beyond its metabolic effects, it possesses anti-inflammatory properties, promoting the polarization of macrophages toward an anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. It has been extensively utilized in research to investigate therapeutic potential in conditions such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, neuroinflammation, and periodontitis.
