GX-12 is a therapeutic DNA vaccine candidate designed for the treatment of HIV infection. It consists of a naked (non-viral) DNA plasmid encoding HIV antigens, combined with a mutant human interleukin-12 (IL-12) gene as an immune adjuvant to enhance HIV-specific immune responses. The vaccine is administered to stimulate both specific (anti-HIV) and broader nonspecific immune responses. Toxicity studies have shown GX-12 to have no toxic effects up to high doses in animal models. Clinical trials have evaluated GX-12 in combination with HAART (Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy) for improving immune responses and safety in HIV-infected patients[1][3].
