Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Gymnema sylvestre leaf extract is a botanical preparation derived from the leaves of the *Gymnema sylvestre* plant, a woody climber native to the tropical regions of India, Africa, and Australia. Known in Ayurveda as "Gurmar" (the sugar destroyer), the extract is primarily utilized for its potent hypoglycemic and anti-obesity properties. The primary bioactive constituents are gymnemic acids, a complex group of triterpene saponins. These compounds function through several mechanisms: they act as antagonists to sweet taste receptors (TAS1R2/TAS1R3) on the tongue, temporarily suppressing the perception of sweetness; they inhibit the intestinal absorption of glucose by interacting with sodium-dependent glucose transporters (SGLT1); and they stimulate the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells, potentially promoting beta-cell regeneration. Clinical and preclinical studies also highlight its hepatoprotective and antihyperlipidemic effects, specifically its ability to lower serum triglycerides and LDL cholesterol while ameliorating liver enzyme elevations associated with diabetes-induced injury.
