Overview

Gynomax is a combination intravaginal pharmaceutical product used for the local treatment of vaginal infections, including vulvovaginal candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, trichomonas vaginitis, and mixed infectious vaginitis. There are several formulations marketed under the name Gynomax or Gynomax XL. The most common formulations contain tinidazole (an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent), tioconazole (a synthetic antifungal agent), and sometimes lidocaine (a local anesthetic). Some regional variants may also include metronidazole, neomycin sulfate, nystatin, and hydrocortisone acetate[1][2][4][5]. Tinidazole acts by reduction of its nitro group via a ferredoxin-mediated electron transport system in anaerobic organisms; this generates free radicals that bind to DNA causing cell death[8]. Tioconazole inhibits ergosterol synthesis in fungal cell membranes leading to increased permeability and cell death[4]. Lidocaine provides rapid local anesthesia for symptom relief[2][6]. The product is indicated primarily for adult women with vaginal infections caused by susceptible organisms.
