Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Gynophilus is a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) containing the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lcr35 (formerly classified as Lactobacillus casei rhamnosus). It is specifically formulated as muco-adhesive, slow-release vaginal tablets (referred to as Lcr regenerans) designed to restore and maintain a healthy vaginal microbiota. The Medical University of Vienna has conducted Phase 3 clinical trials evaluating its efficacy in pregnant women with intermediate vaginal microbiota to prevent preterm birth. The strain Lcr35 works by colonizing the vaginal epithelium, producing lactic acid to lower vaginal pH, and secreting antimicrobial substances that inhibit the growth of pathogens associated with bacterial vaginosis and other forms of vaginal dysbiosis.
