Overview

H-ferritin (FTH1) is the heavy chain subunit of the iron-storage protein ferritin, which plays a central role in cellular iron homeostasis by sequestering and detoxifying intracellular iron. In oncology research, H-ferritin is investigated as a diagnostic probe and a targeted delivery vehicle due to its specific internalization by various cancer cells, including glioblastoma, through receptors such as TIM-1 (T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain-containing protein 1). Preclinical studies utilize radiolabeled H-ferritin (e.g., with Iodine-125) to track iron acquisition mechanisms and tumor localization. Its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and its natural uptake by malignant cells make it a candidate for both imaging and therapeutic applications in neuro-oncology.
