Overview

H. pylori Avidocin is an engineered, narrow-spectrum bactericidal protein (bacteriocin/tailocin) in preclinical development by Pylum Biosciences for the treatment of *Helicobacter pylori* infection and the prevention of associated stomach cancer. Avidocin proteins are engineered R-type bacteriocins, which are phage tail-like complexes that selectively bind to specific surface receptors on target bacteria. Upon binding, the contractile sheath of the Avidocin contracts, driving a needle-like core through the bacterial cell envelope to rapidly kill the pathogen. This highly targeted mechanism of action allows H. pylori Avidocin to eliminate *H. pylori* with surgical precision, avoiding the collateral damage to the protective gut microbiota and the risk of resistance associated with broad-spectrum antibiotics.
