The H1 VLP vaccine is a plant-derived, monovalent virus-like particle influenza vaccine presenting the hemagglutinin 1 (H1) antigen from the 2009 pandemic A/California/07/2009 H1N1 strain on a non-replicating VLP scaffold produced in Nicotiana benthamiana using plant expression technology. It is designed to induce both humoral and cellular immunity against H1N1 influenza, eliciting robust H1-specific Th1 and Th2 CD4 T cells, CD8 T cells, and regulatory T cell responses that limit pulmonary inflammation and improve survival in both adult and aged animal models. Preclinical and early clinical work has been led primarily by Medicago, which has advanced related H1 VLP and quadrivalent VLP influenza vaccines into human trials using its plant-based VLP manufacturing platform.
