The H1N1 VLP vaccine is a virus-like particle (VLP) based vaccine designed to provide protection against the H1N1 strain of the influenza A virus. VLPs are recombinant structures that mimic the external morphology of a virus by displaying key viral proteins, such as hemagglutinin (HA), but lack the viral genome, rendering them non-infectious and unable to replicate. This vaccine type has been developed using various expression systems, most notably Medicago's plant-based platform (using *Nicotiana benthamiana*) and Novavax's insect cell-based platform (using Sf9 cells). The technology was a focal point of the DARPA Blue Angel project, which sought to establish rapid, large-scale domestic manufacturing capabilities for pandemic influenza response. By presenting the HA protein in a particulate, multivalent format, the vaccine effectively stimulates both humoral and cellular immune responses.
