Overview

H1N1sw vaccine refers to the monovalent vaccines developed specifically to combat the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, often referred to as swine flu. These vaccines were designed to target the A/California/07/2009 (H1N1)pdm09 strain. Several pharmaceutical companies produced versions of this vaccine using different manufacturing processes, such as egg-based production for Focetria (Novartis) and Pandemrix (GSK), or cell-culture production for Celvapan (Baxter). Many formulations were adjuvanted with oil-in-water emulsions like MF59 or AS03 to boost immunogenicity, allowing for dose sparing and improved protection in high-risk groups, including the elderly and immunocompromised individuals. While these specific monovalent pandemic vaccines are no longer in routine use, the H1N1 strain they targeted has been integrated into subsequent seasonal trivalent and quadrivalent influenza vaccines.
