The H5 VLP influenza vaccine is a plant-derived virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine candidate developed by Medicago for the prevention of H5N1 pandemic influenza. Produced using Medicago's proprietary Proficia platform, which utilizes *Nicotiana benthamiana* plants as bioreactors, the vaccine consists of recombinant hemagglutinin (HA) proteins that self-assemble into non-infectious particles mimicking the structure of the influenza virus. These VLPs are designed to induce a robust immune response against the H5 antigen without the need for live virus during manufacturing. The vaccine has been evaluated in Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials, often in combination with the adjuvant Alhydrogel (aluminum hydroxide) to enhance immunogenicity. Although the program showed promise in pandemic preparedness, its primary developer, Medicago, ceased operations in early 2023.
