The H5 VLP vaccine is a plant-derived virus-like particle (VLP) influenza A (H5N1) pandemic and avian influenza candidate. It is produced by expressing the hemagglutinin (HA) gene from the target strain in *Nicotiana benthamiana* plants using transient expression technology. The resulting non-infectious particles mimic the structure of native viruses but lack viral genetic material. This design aims to stimulate robust immune responses without risk of infection. The primary mechanism is immunostimulation via presentation of HA antigens to elicit neutralizing antibodies and cellular immunity against diverse clades of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 viruses[3][6][4]. Developed primarily by Medicago and tested with adjuvants such as alum for enhanced immunogenicity[6], it has been evaluated in both preclinical animal models and early-phase human clinical trials for safety and efficacy.
