The H5 VLP vaccine + alhydrogel is a plant-derived, virus-like particle (VLP) influenza vaccine candidate targeting the hemagglutinin (HA) protein of the avian influenza A/H5N1 virus. The HA antigen is produced in plants using a transient expression system and assembled into non-infectious VLPs that mimic the structure of native viruses but lack viral genetic material. The formulation includes Alhydrogel, an aluminum-based adjuvant, to enhance immune responses. This combination aims to induce both humoral and cell-mediated immunity against H5N1 influenza. Clinical studies have shown that while Alhydrogel-adjuvanted formulations elicit detectable antibody responses and robust T-cell immunity, they may not always meet standard licensure criteria for hemagglutination inhibition titers at all tested doses[1][2][4]. Developed primarily by Medicago, this platform offers rapid production capabilities in response to emerging pandemic strains[6].
