Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The H5N1 mRNA vaccine prototype is a preclinical-stage mRNA-based vaccine candidate being developed by Sinergium Biotech in collaboration with the Laboratory of Nucleic Acid Immunotechnology (LITAN) at the University of Buenos Aires-CONICET. The project is supported by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Medicines Patent Pool (MPP), and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Designed as a flexible, 'plug-and-play' mRNA platform, the vaccine uses the H5N1 avian influenza virus (specifically clade 2.3.4.4b) as a prototype pathogen. It delivers genetic sequences encoding the H5N1 hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) antigens, directing host cells to express these proteins and elicit a protective adaptive immune response. This initiative is part of the WHO/MPP mRNA Technology Transfer Programme, which aims to establish local mRNA vaccine manufacturing capacity and improve vaccine access and equity for manufacturers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
