Drug intelligence / Profile preview
H5N1 split virus vaccine + adjuvant refers to a category of monovalent influenza vaccines designed to provide active immunization against the H5N1 subtype of Influenza A virus, commonly known as avian flu. These vaccines utilize an inactivated split-virion preparation, where the virus is chemically disrupted to reduce reactogenicity while preserving the immunogenicity of key surface antigens. Because H5N1 strains are typically poorly immunogenic in humans, these formulations are combined with an adjuvant system—most commonly oil-in-water emulsions like AS03 or MF59, or aluminum salts—to enhance the immune response and allow for dose-sparing. These vaccines are primarily developed for pandemic preparedness and are stockpiled by national health authorities to be deployed in the event of an H5N1 outbreak in the human population.
