Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The H5N1 virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine combined with the adjuvant GLA-SE is an investigational prophylactic influenza vaccine designed to protect against avian influenza A (H5N1). The VLP component mimics the structure of the native virus, presenting hemagglutinin antigens to elicit immune responses without containing viral genetic material. The adjuvant, glucopyranosyl lipid adjuvant in stable emulsion (GLA-SE), is a synthetic TLR4 agonist formulated in an oil-in-water emulsion that enhances both humoral and cell-mediated immunity by activating innate immune pathways, including TLR4 signaling and NLRP3 inflammasome activation. This combination induces robust antibody production as well as Th1-type CD4+ T cell responses. Developed primarily by Medicago, this candidate has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials for safety and immunogenicity in healthy adults[1][3][6].
