Overview

The H5N3 influenza vaccine is an inactivated, recombinant vaccine primarily developed for veterinary use, specifically to protect poultry, such as chickens, against the H5N3 subtype of avian influenza (bird flu). It utilizes reverse genetics technology to combine components from different influenza viruses, allowing for the standardization of antigen content. The vaccine works by introducing inactivated viral components, predominantly the hemagglutinin (H5) protein, to stimulate the immune system. This exposure leads to the production of antibodies that can block viral functions and neutralize the infectivity of the H5N3 virus. A notable example, Poulvac FluFend I AI H5N3 RG, was developed by Fort Dodge Animal Health in collaboration with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the University of Wisconsin. It has been conditionally approved for use in France for controlling avian influenza outbreaks.
